I find so many people focus on their body’s total weight as an indication of how healthy they are. Many weight loss companies measure their client results on total body weight lost and even health services seem to gauge being healthy on total weight and BMI indicators as a general measure from talking to my clients.

Your total body weight doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not in good shape. An extremely high body fat % and having a high visceral fat level might though. Equally, having an extremely low body fat % can be a bad thing too. A healthy level of body fat is needed though to help with regulating body temperature; with vitamin absorption; with acting as personal shock absorber; with cell structure (crucial in maintaining skin, hair and nail health); with the production of hormones and with energy production and warding off illness.

In my view, visceral fat is the one to look out for. It’s not visible as such as it’s stored around your internal organs in your abdominal region, including your liver, pancreas and intestines. Too much visceral fat can interfere with how your liver functions and can interrupt normal hormonal communications between your vital organs. This can lead to insulin resistance (the beginning of diabetes), high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a higher risk for developing heart disease. High visceral fat storage has also been linked to breast cancer, colorectal cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Muscle and bone mass is important too. Muscle burns more calories at rest and, well, is there so you can effectively perform daily activities! Having dense bone mass means a strong skeletal structure. Low bone mass can make you susceptible to fractures.

I think it’s important for people to know what their body is composed of to understand what to change, what to focus on and what to pat themselves on the back for. This is why I offer body composition scans to my clients to help them understand their body composition better….

Alternatively, buy yourself some body composition scales (BIA scales). You can buy some from £40 that provide pretty accurate readings!
